Die IE6! Die. Go to Hell Already

Dear IE 6,

Its been a good run, now please leave.

stopie6

Internet Explorer 6 is web designer’s nightmare. Sometime a web site that you design nicely looks really bad in IE6.  You can take a look at some of best designed website in IE6 and you will understand what I am talking about ( I do not want to point to any site). Moreover, IE 6 does not support PNG. So, if you design your website using png image, all you will see is a grey block behind the image. Also, there are so many security issues with IE 6. I would just ask you to dump any browser Microsoft creates . Seems like anything they come up with is crap (Beside XP and Maybe Windows 7, there is hope). Still not convinced that IE 6/7 has lots of bugs a security issues? Here are the proofs.

So why some people still Use IE 6?

You would think if enough people have known about IE6 alternative browser such as : Firefox, Opera, Flock, Camino they would stop using it. Well not really! Some people have no choices and some people  are just too lazy upgrade. I will not go no too much about this . Read Chris Coyier’s detailed post about, Why  people still use IE? Chrs explains in details with statistics .

5 things you can do to stop IE6

The reason I hate IE6 so much that I sometime I finish a project or theme in two days and later I will spend two or more days just debugging IE6. I will sometime spend hours googling IE 6 fix. Here are the couple of things you can do to help stop IE6

  1. If you know somebody still using Internet Explorer 6, smack them in the head and ” Ask what the hell is wrong with you?” Just kidding. Ask (force) them to upgrade to  one these browser Firefox, Safari , Camino, Flock, Opera. Even more browsers..
  2. If you are tired of fixing you can use this scripts to block IE from seeing your site: StopIE6js, IEBlocker
  3. If your are using wordpress use these plugins: IE warnings, Upgrade IE, Stop Living in the Past , Shockingly Big IE6 Warning which comes with lot of options and ways you can warn or block your sites from IE6
  4. Spread word about StopI6.org and StopI6.com.

Awesome man! I posted some comments before anyway, because a lot of your stuff is really awesome.

  3. bach says:

Just for those few who seem to be offended about IE6 becoming the standard definition of crap, I guess it’s time to stop holding on to your IE6 hacks expertise and try to catch up with technology and see where the industry is heading!

Can’t believe you have the guts to try and hold off technology! IE6 was released in 2001 for God’s sake!

And for the smart ones bragging about PNG “Layers”!
I’m glad you didn’t write that wikipedia post, and seems you haven’t even read it!

Alpha.. is not.. a … layer!!
    It’s a bloody CHANNEL!
Now you have something to google!

phew!! now that this is all out…

I just got my client asking for his site to be compatible with IE6, I will send him the link here, maybe he can hire one of those

I second the title of this post!

OK, here’s my beef. No browser is compliant, since W3c standards are often unclear as to the execution, or developed after a browser implements something. It’s very simple (except for the lack of png support) to design for all browsers, all it takes is knowing the faults of all browsers, and the CSS that will work for them all. Every complaint About IE6 I have ever read stems from a developer developing for FF or similar browsers, taking shortcuts they allow, and then expecting it to work. Take your heads out of the anti-MS sand (I don’t see you ragging about innerHTML, HTTPRequests, and all the other wonderful things IE has brought into web development), and start from a neutral position, and your worlds will be a lot easier . One more thing, I might attach more weight to your analysis, if you site didn’t look so GodAwful. You violate pretty much every design and usability standard in existence. Yuk!

Hal are you a Microsoft employee. You don’t see(or you don’t want to see) how many problems creates Internet Explorer 6 and how much money cost companies developing special for it. Also as consumer think at your pocket. You pay each month from your pocket this extra costs because are included in the price of each product you buy.

@Karina: Thank you for the great response. I appreciate it.

  7. Karina says:

Thanks for talking about this subject. I really.. I mean REALLY hate spending time debugging for IE the websites that I make. I knew IE’s new version would suck I guess I underestimated it a little bit though, since I though it would simple be as bad as the older one, instead it got worst.

As a web designer I really hear what you are saying and I appreciated Chris’s post over at CSS Tricks. I got what you said about PNG, I would normally use jpg or gif if I want to show a regular image (one that has a non transparent background) but I would use PNG for their transparency properties, unfortunately I came accross that problem after I had a website completely built, I had to go back and change the images… yeah… you live and learn though.

Meanwhile, we should continue spreading the word about the great properties other browsers have.

  8. Andrew Jaswa says:

@admin Umm… Do you happen to know what alpha layers are in PNGs? It sounds like you don’t. Let me educate you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Network_Graphics#Transparency_of_image The part you are failing to comprehend is IE6 can display PNGs but they cannot display alpha layers or alpha channels (transparency). Don’t use blanket statements about something you don’t understand.

  9. admin says:

@Andrew Jaswa: When I said I PNG, I meant PNG File format. It is an easy term the web designer’s community understands. Quote from Microsoft “If you browse to a Web page that contains an image that has a transparent background in Portable Network Graphics (PNG) format, the image background may appear to be gray rather than transparent.”
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/294714. Maybe I should have said PNG images. Sorry if you did not like the post.

  10. Andrew Jaswa says:

Could you at least get things correct?

“Moreover, IE 6 does not support PNG.”

Correction: IE6 does not support alpha layers in PNGs.

Don’t get me wrong I have no love for the Internet Explorer line of web browsers, but if you are going to bash something DO IT RIGHT. Yes you go on to talk about transparency issues with IE6, but what you did was a blanket statement that is wrong. So why should I continue reading?

  11. admin says:

@Vince: haha you crack me up!!lolz

  12. Vince says:

I totally agree, everyone still using IE6 (Damn you corporate installs) deserves a nice donkey punch right in the face!

  13. admin says:

@Paul W. Homer: True I hope for the same thing too.

  14. Sadly, if you did managed to get rid of IE6, they’ll just replace it with something else that is equally as lame. It’s a perpetual frustration machine, we surrounded by defect-ware, and will be until people decide to wise up.

  15. lowell says:

“If you are tired of fixing you can use this scripts to block IE from seeing your site: StopIE6js, IEBlocker”

Um, blocking corporate America from viewing your sites is a bit much. Don’t punish the end user, if they’re still using IE6 they probably don’t have a choice.

  16. admin says:

@zEEROCKz: Well as I mentioned I would just get rid of IE. But some people have no choices.

  17. zEEROCKz says:

I’ve just recently converted an awesome Wordpress template to Blogger. It was looking awesome because I did all the work in Firefox. Just went to visit a friend and on his computer I saw the site again… The result was shocking and really messy site. Kill IE6 I’m with you. but lets just not campaign against IE6, we should kill all versions of IE. Switch to Firefox or Chrome.

You can view the original template here..

Yap It is true.. IE6 gets on my nerve

  19. David Hund says:

    Very true!
Good thing there’s a lot of sites popping up to spread the word. Here’s another site that helps people upgrade: http://www.browserupgrade.info

Hopefully this renewed ‘zeal’ to stop IE will actually have an effect this time.

  20. kovshenin says:

“Stop living in the past” LOL that was good :) FF3 and Chrome kick ass 8-)
