I’ve known Jon on twitter for a bit now (I’m fairly new to twitter) but I recognized his site’s influence on webdesign-ne.ws as soon as I seen it and tweeted about it – before talking to Jon about it at all.

From the style of the layout to the inner post pages – the links out to the original site are identical. The navigation to submit news, ect is entirely the same (albeit different images – but it’s the same exact setup).

I’m not trying to argue with anyone or anything, just leaving my two pennies about the situation.

@Alex: I’m not a big Habs fan, but sure, why not? :)
Honestly, I still feel the whole thing sucks, but I’m done fighting, good luck with your site! I don’t bite (unless I feel it’s necessary) so anytime you wanna go for a poutine I’m down for that! Drop me an email!

  • http://www.webdesign-ne.ws/ Alex ElChehimi

@Jon Phillips: now I feel like we’re fighting after the HABS game, I’m in Montreal as well…

you made this very public and tweeted about it :) but fine let’s continue this in private either by email or when we’re eating some Poutine ;)

just want to mention this, I try to make good relations and friends specially within the design community I don’t like the fact that I upset someone. I didn’t have in mind ripping of or anything like that, all the idea was sharing more links and trying to be helpfull for the web community. as I said before I love your site as a concept but also I love it because it’s my style also in terms of design and I designed more than websites using dark colors. #111111 is my favourite color :)

thanks for EVERYONE who commented here.

    Cheers

@Alex: thanks Alex. I may not agree with you or your ethics and you know I’m not happy about the whole thing, but I appreciate that we’re able to communicate in some way here. If you ever want to talk to me directly you can reach me at jon (at) spyrestudios.com

@Samuel: good points, in fact it’s not only about the content on the sites, it’s about the general ideas (including: layout, colors, concept, grid, posting to Twitter, almost identical layout on single posts, similar choice of fonts, etc… the content is a small part of what bugs me.. it’s the site as a whole that bugs me) By the way, I’m french Canadian too (Montreal), nice to meet you! :)

    Cheers
    Jon

@Samuel Garneau: I agree I love all your websites… They are inspiring

  • http://www.samuelgarneau.com Samuel Garneau

@mao : Content theft isn’t really the best argument you can come up with when you know that DesignNewz is posting links to other blog.

Sure they look a lot alike and I’m with DesignNewz on that point… if you want to use the same concept… a least change the design or bring something new.

I’m running a similar system with http://www.weblittlepieces.com (really basic layout compared to webdesign-ne-ws and DesignNews but I focus on the content). At first it was for the fun of it and a way for me to stay in touch with all those blog posts I couldn’t read at the moment. Simply archive them and share them. Now, finding original stuff is thrilling and I want to share the unshared.

So stop fighting about this and share as most as you can ’cause that’s the 2.0 spirit.

P.S : My english is a little bad (French Canadian) so sorry about that ;)

Thanks for the support guys! It pisses me off a bit to see my site ripped off and see Alex acting like it’s ok (we all know it’s not) even changing his layout to 2 columns doesn’t cut it in my opinion… but oh well…

Anyway, his site is probably not gonna get featured on the major css galleries and blogs (many site ownders already confirmed me they are not going to accept his site)… so, case is closed on my end. I don’t have any more time to waste on this. Cheers! :)

Hm— since we really have a big problem with Ripoff’s I would really highly advice you to at least change the layout.
Its not bad to learn from the best, but publish it and under a very close domain name is just poor!
    do something by yourself!

  • http://www.imageco.com/blog ImageCo

No question, it’s a ripoff. I understand ripping off the concept but why bother ripping off the layout. It’s not a bad design but it’s nothing special. If you’re going to plagiarize you might as well ripoff something wonderful.

    I hate rip-offs !

This is a picture-perfect example of design, domain and content theft.

I hope webdesig-ne.ws gets a make over and some original content asap. This is the kind of practise that gives the internet a bad name.

  • mao

um, im not blind, its a ripoff, co-exist yes but at least put some originality in the design and url

  • Tim

Another interesting point that I don’t see in here is that the names are basically the exact same thing.

    design-newz.com & webdesign-ne.ws

  • http://design-newz.com Jon Phillips

@Kawsar: maybe they can co-exist. I just find it a bit odd that the site is… well, almost exactly the same as design-newz….

@Alex: Thanks for replying to this post. I’ve sent you a message using the contact form on webdesign-ne.ws, maybe it doesn’t work…

I’m happy you enjoy design-newz, I really do, but I just feel your new site is extremely similar to design-newz… of course it can be argued that css galleries and even most blogs all have similar layouts, but I simply find it odd that someone would start a new site with a similar grid (3 columns/boxes horizontally), dark colors, posting all links to Twitter automatically, in the same niche… I mean… it’s exactly like design-newz.com, isn’t it? You’re right, Script&Style was founded long before Design-Newz, but it’s very easy to see that the two sites are different, just look at the designs.

You see, I found out about your site because people have been emailing me asking if I’ve seen webdesign-ne.ws and saying they wouldn’t post it in their css galleries or ‘community news’ because they see it as a rip-off of design-newz.

So, can all the people who emailed me be wrong? Maybe….

  • Kawsar Ali

@Alex: well said..the more the better

  • http://www.webdesign-ne.ws Alex

    @Jon Phillips:

    Hi Jon,

I’m the owner of the site and I didn’t get any message from you :) so if you sent me something I want to let you know that I didn’t get it.

I don’t really get your point about the same grid, dark design, and RUNNING on WORDPRESS. for example, css directories don’t they have the same layout most of them, don’t they use wordpress 99% of them. when it comes to the dark design take it this way if you want I got inspired by you, even tho if you check my personal portfolio you’ll see that I’m using dark colors in almost 80% of my designs.
now when it comes to the concept I think http://scriptandstyle.com/ was found at least 7 months before your site, isn’t this the same concept, and I bet that you’ll find hundreds of the same websites :)

I just wanted to clarify this, your site is one of my favorite sites and I always benefit from the good links you post, I think the webdesign community is huge and even hundreds of similar sites won’t be enough for them.

let’s just spread the love :)

    Cheers

    Alex

  • Kawsar Ali

@Jon Phillips: They both can co-exist. I do not see any harm in that. More places for web designer’s to share links. What about when Twitter started, concept was based of facebook status message. I love both sites al ot. I think both can benefit the design community.

    Peace !

  • http://design-newz.com Jon Phillips

Thanks for mentioning Design-Newz.com, it’s appreciated. As for Design-Ne.ws… well, I’ve sent an email to the person who created it already as it’s very very similar to my site. Like Jim said, I too find it kinda odd that someone would start a site with the exact same concept, a very similar grid, a dark design, running on WordPress, etc…. We’ll see what happens.

    Cheers
    Jon

  • http://www.thegraphicmac.com Jim

Kind of odd that DesignNewz has been around for quite a while, then up comes this Design-Ne.ws and uses the exact same WordPress template, and basically the same type of content.
