Importance of a Bona Fide Portfolio for Design Job

Posted October 7, 2011 & filed under Tips & Tools

To secure one of the top job on the market, applicants must set themselves apart from the competition. This is especially for design jobs, in which candidates are compelled to get creative and effectively sell themselves to the employer. As a designer your are expected to be original and artistic. In this post, we will be discussing the gravity of having a crafty portfolio and necessary steps of improving it.

Importance of a “Good” Portfolio

The importance of a polished portfolio cannot be understated, but what should you include in it? Design jobs are awarded because of multifarious exhibitions of polymath inventiveness, or to put it in plain English, you will need a diverse body of work that looks mightily impressive.  Do not try padding it out – submit work that you are proud of, and are capable of discussing in-depth. Bind together sketches, web pages, cartoons and blog entries that show you as a brand, and show your ability to think, evolve and brainstorm. Do not bound into the office clutching an overstuffed binder. Your portfolio reveals how you are as designer whether you design web page or poster. Therefore, having an online portfolio and physical portfolio is a must for any designer. A recruiter would not even bother interviewing you if claim to be a designer but you have nothing to show.

Get Organized and Reviewed

Jobs in design are not given out indiscriminately; got a solid resume in a standard Word template? Bin it. Which is not to say they want your CV written in Wingdings or Latin either; burn the form letter, but do not burn the creative director’s nerves to frayed edges. Another idea may be to design and print individual business cards for yourself; deviating from the status quo and forging your own identity is to be commended. It may be your dream to forge a design career, but without guidance, your aspirations may be confined to idle fantasy.  If necessary, source help to make sure you get your submission spot on. Show your portfolio to tutors and go along to portfolio reviews convened by local design organizations. Create the perfect CV, assemble the perfect portfolio and you will land the job you are after, not by accident, but by design.
